TopSpin360

Neck training in every direction at once.

A fitted helmet with a weighted arm on top. The athlete circles their head to spin the weight, and the spinning load trains the neck through every direction, at speed. Winner of the NFL 1st and Future competition in 2019.

How it works

Self-generated resistance

Circling the head spins the weighted arm. The faster the athlete circles, the greater the pull the neck has to control.

Every direction, together

Instead of one direction at a time, the neck works through flexion, extension, side-bending and rotation in one smooth movement.

Short, regular sessions

A registered study used about 10–15 minutes, three times a week, for 12 weeks: 3–5 sets of 50 revolutions each way.

The research

Evidence, honestly

Studies using TopSpin360

A randomised trial is under way

Mayo Clinic has registered a randomised study of TopSpin360 in junior ice hockey players, measuring neck strength, force, reaction time and brain-health markers. Results have not been posted yet.

ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06052553

The wider research

Stronger necks, lower odds

In 6,704 high school athletes, each extra pound of neck strength went with 5% lower odds of concussion. This is an association, not proof of cause.

Collins et al. 2014, J Prim Prev

Strength and bracing reduce head motion

In the lab, stronger necks and bracing before an impact went with less head movement.

Eckner et al. 2014, Am J Sports Med

Training builds strength

Resistance training reliably increases neck strength, but trials haven’t shown it reduces head acceleration on impact.

Ivanic et al. 2024, Br J Sports Med

The link is still uncertain

Pooling 8 studies of 7,625 athletes found only a small, uncertain link between neck strength and concussion (very low certainty).

Garrett et al. 2023, JOSPT

In plain words: Neck training builds neck strength, and stronger, better-braced necks go with less head movement. Whether neck training reduces concussion is not yet known, and no product prevents concussion. We’ll add the TopSpin360 trial results when they’re published.
